What to include for each reference
- Full name
- Job title and organisation
- Relationship to you, e.g. "Line manager at Acme, 2021–2024"
- Email address
- Phone number
The editor has a field for each of these, and lays them out consistently in the same template, palette, and typeface as your resume.
Who to ask
Three references is standard. Prefer recent managers, then senior colleagues or clients who saw your work closely. For a first job, a lecturer, internship supervisor, or volunteer coordinator works well. Avoid family and friends.
Always ask permission first, tell each person which roles you are applying for, and send them your latest resume so they can speak to it.
Keep references off the resume itself
"References available upon request" wastes a line — employers assume it. Keep a separate reference page ready and send it when asked. With katlab.cv, Download bundle packages your resume, cover letter, and reference list together.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put references on my resume?
No. Use a separate reference list and share it only when the employer asks, usually after an interview.
How many references do I need?
Three is the norm. Some public-sector and academic roles ask for two to five; follow the posting.
